Archives For God

As you all have seen and heard, there have been some catastrophic events happen in our state of Oklahoma. Thank the Lord, these storms blew past our family, but for many in Moore and Shawnee, OK that was note the case. They have now lost loved ones, family, friends, and some folks have lost pretty much everything. I know the folks of Moore, OK would love your help. Our church is taking up donations (find out more here) and having a prayer service this Wednesday night, but if you would like to help, here are two big suggestions right now:

  1. PRAY! – pray for these families that have been affected. There is great loss, as you well know. Pray as a family. Pray individually. Pray as a church, Sunday School class or small group.
  2. Donate – I highly suggest giving to BGCO Disaster Relief. The big reason is that 100% of all the money given goes straight to the people affected. Here is a direct link to the site if you would like to give online (click here).

Thank you friends and family. Please be praying for this great tragedy. May God bless the brokenhearted and bless the efforts of first responders, volunteers, churches and organizations, and all who help. May God use this tragic event for good. I believe He can and He will.

Do you want to know what desperation looks like? Well, accelerate your DeLorean up to eighty-eight miles and watch your flux capacitor light up. We’re traveling back to 1998. The year I discovered my hair was exiting my scalp at a higher velocity than normal. That is textbook desperation. From that point on I knew male pattern baldness was inevitable. So, to make matters worse, I decided to speed up the process.

But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.” (Mark 5:36 NLT)

Just. Have. Faith.

I will be honest with you. These three words are a game changer in my personal walk. I wish it were that easy. These three simple, but very important, words have pierced my heart.

One of the basic tenants of Christianity is this: God desires a relationship with you. Christianity is about a relationship. It is not about a religion. Therefore, if God desires a relationship with you, there has to be a way for us to know Him.

The way we know God is through revelation.

Revelation is God’s self-disclosure of His attributes to all humankind. It is the pulling back of the curtain so to speak. Think Wizard of Oz. This happens two ways. Let us briefly look at these two ways God reveals Himself. Continue Reading…

What Does Righteousness Mean?

Here is a definition of righteousness from Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary, “Holy and upright living, in accordance with God’s standard. The word righteousness comes from a root word that means ‘straightness.’ It refers to a state that conforms to an authoritative standard. Righteousness is a moral concept. God’s character is the definition and source of all righteousness (Gen 18:25; Deut 32:4; Rom 9:14). Therefore, man’s righteousness is defined in terms of God’s.”

God’s Righteousness And Justice

In the Old Testament, God’s righteousness is often married with His justice. Therefore, the judgments God makes are right. God is a righteous judge. We can trust His decisions.
“Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?’” (Genesis 18:25b).
“Say among the nations, ‘The LORD reigns’ … [and] he will judge the peoples with equity” (Psalms 96:10 a,c).
“Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:8)”   Continue Reading…

God is holy. Who would disagree? I mean, it says it in black and white: For I am the Lord your God, so you must consecrate yourselves and be holy because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground. For I am the Lord, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God, so you must be holy because I am holy. - Leviticus 11:44-45, 1 Peter 1:16

But what does “holy” mean?

Stop Playing God

Saul meeteth with Samuel

We would never do that, right? I mean, who could? Why would we??

Sometimes we do and maybe we don’t even realize it. Scarier yet, maybe we mask playing God with “good intentions” or “good religious actions.” Let me illustrate it with a story in the Bible. Continue Reading…

Protest reformer Martin Luther, writing in the 1520′s, also described ‘the hidden God’ of the Bible, a God so awesome that he cannot directly reveal himself to human beings without overwhelming us. For this reason, Luther wrote, God keeps himself partially hidden, even to those who seek him.

There is a strong dose of humility among the best of these authors, a willingness to admit the limits of our ability to understand God and how he might interact with our world, ‘I recommend that speculations he laid aside, wrote Luther, ‘and I should like to have this rule adhered to after my death.’

Here we must acknowledge, with sadness, that the Christian church has produced many pastors and theologians who have ignored Luther’s rule. They assure us, with cold logic and hot sermons, that they know perfectly well why many people feel so alienated from God. The reality, we are told, is that God has rejected those people. He has hidden himself so that he cannot be found by them. God will reveal himself to a chosen few but has destined the rest of human race to eternal darkness and futility.

Whatever the good intentions of these individuals, something has gone wrong with their entire approach to the God of the Bible. They have confused their own prejudices and speculations with the teachings of Jesus. Let’s not mince words. They notion that God would conceal himself so that people could never find him, that he would take pleasure in abandoning human souls to utter desolation – here is an idea that seems to have bubbled up from the lava pit of hell (Joseph Loconte, The Searchers, 15).

No matter what you have done, God has not rejected you. He loves you. He loves all people (John 3:16). Please do not let lies from the pit of hell challenge this Biblical truth. There is nothing that makes you unable to know God. He wants you to know Him and He makes Himself available to all! He has revealed Himself to everyone (Romans 1:20).

Can God change? Does He change? The answer: no! If He could or did change, it would mean He is no longer God. Because God does not change, there are some incredible applications we can make in our lives. Let’s dig a little bit deeper… Continue Reading…
